Creating a non-toxic home can be extremely scary and overwhelming. There are so many products in our world that play a role in our health and we don’t even know it. We’ve had a toxin free home for the last 2 years and I’m still learning the ins and outs of everything. Today, I’m going to share some simple tips and ways you can begin your journey in a toxin-free home!
A great place to start is small. Any step toward eliminating the harmful chemicals in your home, can honestly make a WORLD of a difference.
1 – Cleaning Products
Yes, this is a BIG category. I know the world of bleach is a game changer in your cleaning cabinet, but I’m telling you, IT WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE. Maybe not that drastic, but it’s such a big thing removing these from your home. You know when you go to the store and you walk by the cleaning product/laundry isle? That STRONG smell that comes wafting off the little bottles placed strategically on the shelf. Yeah, they’re all CLOSED and SEALED and you can still get their odor from them. Imagine this in your home. It’s not good for anyone in your home, especially if you have babies, kids, or pets.
REMOVE IT ALL. Toss the toxins. I mean everything, bleach, windex, your all purpose “natural” cleaning spray. If you really want to make sure these products are safe, I HIGHLY recommend two apps you can easily download on your phone to scan product codes that will give you all the dirty details of what’s in them.
I recommend all of my family and friends Branch Basics. They are the ONLY brand I trust for safe cleaning. All of their products are human safe (how much more amazing does that get) and come without a scent. You can purchase the entire set for an additional $10.00 using my code here:

2 – Laundry Soap/Fabric Softener
This is such a culprit for SO MANY chemicals. Our skin is the largest organ on our body and it absorbs the highest amount of chemicals. Meaning if those chemicals are entering through your skin, they’re causing havoc on all of your organs/bloodstream/hormones.
According to the EWG website, they state;
Hundreds of everyday products are made with highly toxic fluorinated chemicals called PFAS. They build up in our bodies and never break down in the environment. Very small doses of PFAS have been linked to cancer, reproductive and immune system harm, and other diseases.
Branch Basics also comes with a bottle for laundry detergent. Also, some good old vinegar is your best friend with cleaning. Sure, it doesn’t smell great but it’s a natural anti-bacterial and odor eliminator. Throw in your branch basics laundry soap and 1/2 cup vinegar and your laundry and body will thank you later, I promise.
For softener, we use all organic wool dryer balls. These are SUCH a game changer and they also help with your laundry and dry time. They go straight in with your clothes. I always add any essential oil I have next to our washer and dryer which is typically tea tree, lemon, or lavender. Throw a few drops onto the dryer ball and toss it in with your laundry and you’ve officially done an entire load of laundry toxic free and you won’t ever turn back.
3 – Cookware
Yes,we all know how amazing non-stick pans and cookware is, but have you ever looked into the chemicals it let’s off when you use them at high temps? They release the fumes and chemical trail when cooked which in turn leaks into your food. GROSS.
Switch your cookware to STAINLESS STEEL pots and pans. Stainless steel has an alloy strength that keeps them from leaching any chemicals into your food.
Cast iron pans are also great for cooking because they are similar to stainless steel. Just make sure you are sticking to the cooking temps and watching how you use them!
4 – Candles
Wax candles let off highly toxic chemicals into the air. Most candles are made of paraffin wax, which creates highly toxic benzene and toluene when burned (both are known carcinogens). This isn’t good for any ones health no matter how good your fall scented candle may smell.
TOSS THEM! Make the switch to essential oils.
We use Plant Therapy in our home. We do use Young Living as well, but over the last 8 years I’ve been using essential oils, I have found Plant Therapy to be HIGH QUALITY, AFFORDABLE, and they offer all of the information, live videos, and education on how to properly use each oil. Their website is super user friendly and they are AMAZING.
They also offer a table that will show you each oil that compares to each other in both Doterra and Young Living.
You can use my code for $10.00 of your purchase or $25.00. That’s a freaking steal.
5 – Food Storage
Plastic food storage is affordable and can look really great for food storage, but even food grade safe plastic can leach chemicals into your food.
You can buy really affordable and safe glass food storage which is highly durable and won’t ever leach harmful chemicals into your food. Amazon always has amazing sets that you can purchase for a great price.
Now, we all know that we have an obscene amount of plastic Tupperware that’s completely overflowing in your kitchen cabinet somewhere. Don’t deny it. We all have one (we used to, but we ditched every last piece of plastic in our kitchen when our daughter was born and I learned all about the harm they were causing without us even knowing)
Stainless steel food storage for your lunch on your way to work. They have AWESOME food containers that have compartments for you to have easy access to all your lunch needs. Amazon is my go to for these.
I have an entire list of my favorite Amazon products we use in the kitchen and home.
6 – Filter Your Water
I cannot stress this one enough. EWG has a tool you can search your zip code by that will tell you all the chemicals that are found in your water source in your area. Talk about disgusting. Tap water is so bad, even if you’re living somewhere like us, where Denver has a great water source from mountain springs. We still don’t ever drink water from the tap and you shouldn’t either. Chemicals in our water supply have been linked to brain development in children, reproductive issues, and cancer.
Some great filters I recommend:
Big Berkey Water Filter. (yes, they’re pricey but so worth it)
Aquagear Water Pitcher – This is what we use in our home because we haven’t made the plunge into a Berkey yet, but it’s on our saving for list!
7 – Skin Care / Body Care
Yes, this include your shampoo and conditioner. Everything you use on your body gets absorbed extremely easy. Use that Thin Dirty App I recommend above to ensure your staying away from the harmful chemicals that companies hide in our products.
10 chemicals you should avoid in all of your personal care products:
- Synthetic colors/fragrances.
- Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) / Sodium laureth sulfate (SLES).
These chemicals all play a role in our hormone levels as well. If you’re feeling tired constantly, sick, have anxiety issues, sleep problems, it can be LINKED TO YOUR PERSONAL CARE PRODUCTS. I can guarantee you will feel so much better when you toss these and purchase better quality ones with safe ingredients.
8 – Invest in an Air Filter
There are so many ins and outs to this category because even classic air filters can let off harmful chemicals. When you are purchasing an air filter, make sure you are opting for ones that have NO OZONE. This is essential when choosing the right air filter for your home.
One I recommend and what we use in our home
9 – Purchase Organic Food
This is so important. Food that is not certified organic can be covered or filled with pesticides. Imagine bringing that into your home as well. Pesticides have been used for decades by farmers to grow crops faster. There is a major food shortage that we’ve been dealing with lately, but that’s for a different blog post.
Purchasing organic food options also helps to ensure you’re not allowing those chemicals into your body either. Gluten allergies have become such a wide spread issue with adults and children in recent years and pesticides have played a MAJOR roll in that.
ALWAYS wash your produce before putting it in your fridge or where you store it. I like to run my sink with water and use both vinegar and apple cider vinegar to ensure it’s all getting clean and pesticide free. Both vinegar and ACV have properties that eat pesticides and eliminate bacteria.
10 – Take your shoes off when you get home!
Don’t walk into your home with your shoes on. I am a firm believer in EVERYONE removes those shoes when we walk in. When you are outside, you can track every chemical, bacteria, sickness, and more on your shoes. If you’re not taking them off when you enter your home, imagine all of that getting brought into your house. BIG NO NO!
This will also help with cleaning because tracking dirt, debris and all the other fun things we run into outside into your home is another area of cleaning that is so not fun to tackle.
There you have it. Don’t be overwhelmed. Small steps can make a world of a difference in your home and the way you feel everyday. Start small, with just one of the tips on this list. I hope this finds you well, and that you can all start your journey on a toxin-free home, too!
